Media relations

Research shows that Finns have a high level of trust in the media. Outlets like Yle, Helsingin Sanomat, Kauppalehti, and the Finnish News Agency (STT) provide the reliable and high-quality information people seek to deliver daily news and make sense of a complex world. Companies are also perceived as credible and trustworthy when they appear in the media. Media visibility has a significant impact on the awareness and reputation of companies and organizations.

The media is an essential pillar of democracy and acts as a watchdog of power. Journalism serves as a gatekeeper and curator of topics, guided by ethical principles such as fact-checking and striving for the highest possible objectivity. An article in the biggest newspaper in Finland, Helsingin Sanomat, is considered far more reliable than a paid advertisement on its pages.

Positive publicity has a major impact on an organization’s image and reputation. Through the media, you can communicate news about your activities, participate and influence the debate in the industry and build yourself into a thought leader. Media publicity is like a constantly updated follow-up report. The story of Nokia’s mobile phone business from its rise to its sad end is told to us by the media.

Media coverage is not always positive. Prolonged bad publicity erodes an organization’s reputation and impacts negatively on business. Bad publicity does not come out of nowhere but is in many cases caused by the organization’s own actions. Cover-ups, misrepresentations or outright lies lead to bad outcomes.

When dealing with the media, it is important to understand the media’s ways of working and news criteria. Why should your organization be of interest to the media, how to approach the media, how to build relationships with journalists who follow your industry issues or how to act in media interviews?

Trust and openness are important in media relations. Journalists favor collaborating with organizations that are positive and open about their work. Interviews are preferably conducted with experts who are easy to approach and have interesting views on developments in their industry. The more you help a journalist to make a good story, the clearer your organization’s messages will be in news articles.
